THE MESSAGE
Sermons, messages, and reflections from our notes.
Passages and reflections on 1 Corinthians 15:33, Proverbs 13:20, 1 Timothy 5:2.
1. Choose Companions Who Help You Do Right
“The youth who are in harmony with Christ will choose companions who will help them in right doing, and will shun society that gives no aid in the development of right principles and noble purposes.”
“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.”
1 Corinthians 15:33
This means a boy and girl friendship is not judged only by how close they are, but by where the friendship is leading them. If it helps both grow in purity, prayer, respect, and obedience, it can be safe. If it weakens spiritual life, it is dangerous.
2. Friendship Has Influence
“It is inevitable that the youth will have associates, and they will necessarily feel their influence.”
“One catches the ideas, the sentiments, the spirit, of another.”
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
Proverbs 13:20
A best friend is not just someone you talk to. They shape your thinking, your feelings, your choices, and even your spiritual direction.
3. Keep the Friendship Pure
“The younger as sisters, with all purity.”
1 Timothy 5:2
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Proverbs 4:23
A boy should treat a girl like a sister in Christ, with respect and purity. A girl should also treat a boy with honour. This means no flirting with sin, no secret emotional attachment, no lustful closeness, and no playing with feelings.
4. Do Not Let Friendship Replace God
“If, in your infatuation, you can repeatedly turn from the prayer meeting, where God meets with His people, in order to enjoy the society of one who has no love for God… how can you expect God to prosper such a union?”
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
Exodus 20:3
If a friendship makes someone love prayer less, church less, Bible study less, or God less, then the friendship has become spiritually dangerous.
5. Do Not Awaken Love Too Early
“The young affections should be restrained until the period arrives when sufficient age and experience will make it honorable and safe to unfetter them.”
“I charge you… that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.”
Song of Solomon 8:4
This is very important. Sometimes a boy and girl say they are “just best friends,” but the heart becomes attached. Then jealousy, confusion, emotional dependence, and temptation can come in.
6. Avoid Night, Secrecy, and Tempting Situations
“Satan’s angels are keeping watch with those who devote a large share of the night to courting.”
“Abstain from all appearance of evil.”
1 Thessalonians 5:22
“Flee also youthful lusts.”
2 Timothy 2:22
A close friendship should not be hidden, secretive, or careless. Late-night private talks, emotional dependence, physical closeness, and acting like a couple can slowly lead the heart away from purity.
7. True Love Is Not Selfish
“To love as Christ loved means to manifest unselfishness at all times and in all places, by kind words and pleasant looks.”
“Charity suffereth long, and is kind… seeketh not her own.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-5
True Christian friendship is not possessive. It does not control, manipulate, tempt, or confuse. It seeks the other person’s good before God.
Final Thought
A boy and girl can be best friends, but only if the friendship stays pure, open, wise, respectful, and Christ-centred. The safest question is not only, “Are we doing anything wrong?” but, “Is this friendship helping both of us become closer to Jesus?”
