A true Christian

Passages and reflections on James 2:19, Romans 10:9-10, Matthew 5:13-16.

A true Christian

someone who has put faith and trust in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ through His death on the cross and subsequent resurrection, our behavior mirrors, reflects and resembles Christ. Being gracious and merciful to others is behaving like Christ.

A Christian is someone who believes in Jesus Christ and follows his teachings.

More than two billion people across the world describe themselves as Christians. The Christian faith crosses all boundaries of culture, ethnicity, class and nationality.

People express their Christian faith in different ways which is why there are so many different denominations or styles of church.

The Bible book 1 Peter speaks of the Church now not as a building or a tradition but being made from ‘living stones’ – the Christian Church is its people. The same book also describes Christians as, ‘a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation belonging to God.

Just going to church and saying you believe in Christ doesn’t make you a Christian. Just like living in a country doesn’t make you it’s citizen, but with the requirements needed to be its exact citizen
James 2:19

So what makes you a Christian?

Acts 26:28; 1 Peter 4:16

A Christian responds to God's calling

God's Word is quite clear that one cannot just choose to be a Christian! There is a calling or invitation involved. God is not calling all of mankind at this time (Matthew 22:14; John 6:44), nor the particularly rich, famous or powerful of the world (1 Corinthians 1:26-27).

God most often calls ordinary people who can more readily acknowledge their human weaknesses and learn God's way. These are people who have made mistakes, know it, yet appreciate the forgiveness that God extends to them (Matthew 21:23, 31-32). (Acts 2:38-39; 1 Corinthians 7:14).
A question to ask yourself is are you an ordinary person ? if you call yourself a Christian

To be a true Christian, a person must change—really change! Acts 2:37-39 shows that Christians must "repent" and walk a different way of life. After repentance, a Christian must also be baptized (immersed in water) by a servant of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38; 8:14-17).

Obviously, a human being cannot change everything at once, but one can have a repentant attitude and turn in the right direction, making basic changes as he or she embarks on a new path of overcoming sin, bearing "fruits worthy of repentance" (Matthew 3:8).

Following water baptism, God offers His Holy Spirit to the repentant believer (Acts 2:38). A person is not "of Christ" unless the Spirit of God is in him or her (Romans 8:9). This Spirit is imparted by the laying on of hands by an authorized representative of Jesus Christ (Acts 8:17-18). Through repentance, baptism and the receiving of God's Holy Spirit, a Christian is then able to understand the spiritual truth of God and His Word (1 Corinthians 2:11).

The example of Jesus Christ

The apostle Paul also helps us understand what a Christian is by simply stating that we should imitate Paul as he imitated Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1). Later in the first century, the apostle Peter likewise reminded the Church that they were to follow Christ's example (1 Peter 2:21).

Christ's example included worshipping God on the Sabbath day (from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday) and on the Bible's annual Holy Days (Luke 4:16; John 7; compare Leviticus 23). His example also involved compassion and love for others (John 3:16; Matthew 9:36) along with keeping the commandments of God (Matthew 5:17-19).

Christians will understand the teachings and way of life in the Scriptures and will strive to live by them (Luke 4:4).

Why should you/ I be a Christian ?

Eternal life. One of the inevitable things we all face is death. Even when death seems a relief, there is much doubt over what it will mean. The promise of Jesus is that whoever believes in him will have eternal life.
(John 3:16)

2.     Knowing the meaning and purpose of life. As a Christian we know that the meaning and purpose of existence is to ‘glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.’[1]
(1 Corinthians 10:31; Psalm 36:7-9)

3.     Forgiveness of sin. 1 John 1:8 says that anyone who claims they are without sin is a liar - as if we needed the bible to tell us that! Yet sin often weighs us down; we feel blocked from relating to God and wish we hadn’t done the thing. In Christ we have real forgiveness of sins.
(Ephesians 1:7)

4.     Freedom from the power of sin. By Christ’s death we have also been freed from slavery to sin. Particular sins need not hold power over us.
(Romans 8:2)

5.     Freedom from guilt. Christ died, not just to free us from sin, but also from the guilt associated with that sin. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus.
(Romans 8:1)

6.     A relationship with God. We have peace with God through the work of Christ. The forgiveness of our sins means that we are now free to relate to God and to know God.
(John 14:20; Ephesians 2:17-18)

If you find some one that you don’t know dying on the road, what are you going to do? Just walk pass and be like “sorry, bud not my problem” mainly we would say no, but act to help the “even tho we don’t know them but we don’t want to just stand there and let them die. You’ll either call for help or even give them the help that you can In order to see them survive.

And we recommend good things to others either friends or families. So

What’s the difference if you have heard about the word of God and the amazing rewards that comes with it, why not share with others? Perhaps your friends pr families. Or guide strangers to Christ to save that like how you have been saved ?

Jeremiah 1:5

So let’s not just be Christians by mouth (words) , Like Jesus say to us in Mathew 7:21
