Growing Daily in God’s Word – Advancing in the School of Christ

1. Growth Is a Daily Necessity

The Christian life is designed for continual progress. Just as a child must eat daily and study consistently to grow strong and wise, so the believer must feed daily on God’s Word. Without daily growth, the spiritual life becomes weak and lifeless. The Bible makes this clear: “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). Growth in grace is not a one-time event but a lifelong, step-by-step journey. If we are not advancing, we are, in truth, sliding backward.

📖 Supporting Verse: “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2).

2. The Danger of Remaining at One Level

In school, a student who refuses to advance from one grade to the next is considered to be failing. Spiritually, the same principle applies. Paul rebuked early believers for failing to grow: “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again… and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat” (Hebrews 5:12). God does not want us to remain spiritual infants, satisfied with a shallow understanding. We are called to go deeper, moving from the simple truths to a fuller grasp of God’s Word.

✍️ Ellen G. White:

“God intends that, even in this life, truth shall be ever unfolding to His people. There is no excuse for anyone in taking the position that there is no more truth to be revealed.” (Counsels to Writers and Editors, p. 35)

⸻

3. Diligence and Effort in God’s Word

Spiritual maturity requires consistent effort. Just as education requires study, practice, and discipline, so does Christian growth. One does not become wise in the Word by accident. We must dedicate time to prayer and the Scriptures every day. Paul urged Timothy: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed” (2 Timothy 2:15).

✍️ Ellen G. White:

“The formation of a noble character is the work of a lifetime, and must be the result of diligent and persevering effort. God gives opportunities; success depends upon the use made of them.” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 223)

A careless student fails in school; likewise, a careless Christian fails to grow.

⸻

4. Always Learning in the School of Christ

In earthly schools, there is a day of graduation. But in the school of Christ, we are lifelong learners. Each day presents fresh opportunities to understand God’s truth and apply it. No one ever “graduates” from learning Christ until He comes again.

✍️ Ellen G. White:

“We are ever to be learners in the school of Christ, never graduates.” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, p. 43)

This means we must remain humble and teachable, continually receiving light and truth from God’s Word.

5. Conclusion & Appeal

Just as a child who does not grow causes great concern, so a Christian who refuses to grow grieves the heart of God. He calls us to advance step by step—feeding daily on His Word, strengthening our faith through prayer, and obeying His will in all things. Our spiritual growth is proof of our life in Christ. When He returns, He will not change our character but will reveal what we have become through daily learning and growth in Him.

📖 Final Verse: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6).

✍️ Final EGW Thought:

“He who does nothing but pray will soon cease to pray, or his prayers will become a formal routine. When men take themselves out of the channel of duty, they separate themselves from the help of God. Praying and working are two things, but they must blend.” (Steps to Christ, p. 101)

⸻

✨ Lesson Takeaway: Spiritual growth is not automatic—it requires daily feeding on God’s Word, diligence, and a teachable heart. Just as students must advance in school, so must we press forward in the school of Christ until the day of His appearing.
