Heaven on Earth and Hell on Earth

Passages and reflections on Luke 17:21, John 14:27, John 16:33.

Heaven on Earth and Hell on Earth

Heaven and hell are not only future realities. The Bible shows that both can begin in a person’s life now. Heaven on earth begins when Christ rules the heart. Hell on earth begins when sin rules the heart.

Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21). “The kingdom of God begins in the heart.”

1. Heaven on earth is God’s presence in the heart

Heaven is where God’s presence, will, love, holiness, peace, and joy are fully experienced. So when a person receives Christ, heaven begins inside them even before they physically enter heaven.

Jesus said:

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you” (John 14:27).

“In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Paul wrote:

“The kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost” (Romans 14:17).

This means a Christian can have heaven inside even while living in a troubled world. The outside may be painful, but the inside can be peaceful.

EGW says, “Heaven’s communion begins on earth. We learn here the keynote of its praise.”

So prayer, worship, obedience, love, forgiveness, and service are not just religious duties. They are practice for heaven.

2. Heaven on earth is shown in character

Heaven is not only a place of golden streets. It is a place of holy character. If we want heaven later, God must prepare heaven inside us now.

Galatians says the fruit of the Spirit is:

“Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance” (Galatians 5:22–23).

That is the atmosphere of heaven. When a person becomes loving instead of hateful, patient instead of angry, pure instead of corrupt, forgiving instead of bitter, heaven is beginning in that person.

EGW says, “The character which we now manifest is deciding our future destiny,” and that if people become members of heaven’s royal family, “it will be because heaven has begun with them on earth.”

That is deep. It means heaven is not just something God gives later; it is something God starts building in us now.

3. Heaven on earth can exist in suffering

Heaven on earth does not mean life becomes easy. Some of the most heavenly people in the Bible suffered greatly.

Joseph was betrayed, sold, lied about, and imprisoned, but God was with him (Genesis 39:2–3, 21). Daniel was taken from his homeland, but he stayed faithful and carried the spirit of heaven in Babylon (Daniel 1:8). Paul and Silas were beaten and placed in prison, but at midnight they prayed and sang praises (Acts 16:25).

Their environment looked like hell, but their hearts were connected to heaven.

This teaches us that heaven on earth is not mainly about comfort. It is about Christ’s presence.

4. Hell on earth is separation from God

Hell on earth begins when a person lives separated from God. Sin may look enjoyable at first, but it slowly produces guilt, fear, shame, anger, emptiness, addiction, broken relationships, and spiritual death.

Isaiah says:

“Your iniquities have separated between you and your God” (Isaiah 59:2).

Paul says:

“The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

Proverbs says:

“The way of transgressors is hard” (Proverbs 13:15).

That is hell on earth: living with no peace, no true joy, no spiritual rest, and no living connection with God.

5. Hell on earth is shown in the lives of Bible characters

Cain experienced hell on earth before he killed Abel. His jealousy and anger controlled him (Genesis 4:5–8). Saul experienced hell on earth while sitting on the throne. He had position, power, and wealth, but jealousy destroyed his peace (1 Samuel 18:8–12). Judas walked with Jesus physically, but greed and unbelief destroyed him inwardly (Matthew 27:3–5).

This shows that hell can exist in a palace, and heaven can exist in a prison.

The real issue is not location. The real issue is who rules the heart.

6. Selfishness creates hell on earth

Selfishness is one of the strongest roots of hell on earth. It destroys homes, friendships, churches, marriages, communities, and even nations.

EGW wrote that selfishness “separates us from God and produces so many contagious spiritual disorders.”

That is why Satan’s kingdom is built on self: self-will, self-glory, self-pleasure, self-protection, self-exaltation.

But Christ’s kingdom is built on love, sacrifice, humility, and service.

Jesus said:

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).

The cross is the death of selfishness. When self dies, heaven begins. When self rules, hell begins.

7. Heaven on earth in the home

A home can become a small picture of heaven when Christ rules there.

A heavenly home is not perfect, but it has prayer, forgiveness, respect, kindness, truth, patience, and worship. Parents speak with love. Children learn obedience. Family members forgive quickly. The Bible is respected. God is welcomed.

Joshua said:

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).

A house can have expensive furniture and still feel like hell if there is shouting, pride, abuse, coldness, and sin. Another house can be simple and poor, but feel like heaven because Christ is there.

8. Hell on earth in the mind

Some people suffer hell in their own thoughts. Anxiety, guilt, lust, bitterness, pride, anger, jealousy, and unbelief can torment the mind.

But Christ offers rest.

Jesus said:

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

David said:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

Peace begins when the heart is surrendered.

9. Heaven on earth in the church

The church should be a small taste of heaven. People should feel love, truth, reverence, unity, forgiveness, and care.

Jesus said:

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35).

But a church can also become a place of hell on earth if there is gossip, pride, fighting, coldness, hypocrisy, jealousy, and spiritual dryness.

So the question is not only, “Do we attend church?” but “Does heaven’s spirit live among us?”

10. Heaven and hell are both choices of direction

Every day we are moving toward one kingdom or the other.

Romans 8:6 says:

“To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

The carnal mind is the beginning of hell. The spiritual mind is the beginning of heaven.

A person who chooses Christ, prayer, obedience, forgiveness, humility, and holiness is already walking toward heaven.

A person who chooses sin, pride, lust, bitterness, rebellion, and selfishness is already tasting the road to destruction.

11. But the full heaven is still future

We must not confuse “heaven on earth” with the final heaven. This earth is still damaged by sin. People still die. Christians still suffer. The full heaven comes when Jesus returns.

Revelation says:

“God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying” (Revelation 21:4).

That is the final heaven. No sin. No pain. No temptation. No sickness. No death.

12. And the final hell is also future

Hell on earth is the present result of sin, but final destruction happens at the end, after judgment.

Revelation says:

“Death and hell were cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:14).

Malachi says:

“The day cometh, that shall burn as an oven” (Malachi 4:1).

God does not want anyone to be lost. He is calling people now.

“The Lord is… not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).

Final deep thought

Heaven on earth is Christ living in the heart before we live with Him in the heavenly kingdom.

Hell on earth is sin ruling the heart before sin reaches its final destruction.

So the question is not only, “Where will I go when I die?” The deeper question is:

What kingdom is already growing inside me now?

If Christ rules the heart, heaven has begun.

If sin rules the heart, hell has begun.

“Choose you this day whom ye will serve” (Joshua 24:15).

heaven on earth is when a person’s mind and heart are living in peace, meaning, hope, love, forgiveness, self-control, and connection with God and others, even when life is not perfect; while hell on earth is when the mind becomes trapped in guilt, shame, fear, bitterness, envy, addiction, hatred, trauma, or inner chaos, so the person may look alive outside but feels tormented inside. This connects with the Bible because Romans 8:6 says, “To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace,” meaning the direction of the mind affects the condition of the soul. Heaven on earth begins when Christ renews the mind, heals the heart, and gives rest, as Jesus said, “Come unto me… and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Hell on earth begins when sin, selfishness, and separation from God rule the inner life, because “the way of transgressors is hard” (Proverbs 13:15). So psychologically and spiritually, heaven or hell can start inside a person before it becomes their final destiny.
