Strength Found in the “WEAK”

Lesson: Strength Found in the “Weak”

Key Verse:

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9

Introduction

The world often sees strength as power, influence, and self-sufficiency. However, the Bible teaches that true strength is found in dependence on God, especially in times of weakness. This paradox is a central theme in Scripture and is echoed in the writings of Ellen G. White.

1. Biblical Examples of Strength in Weakness

a) Paul and the Thorn in the Flesh
• 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 – Paul speaks of a “thorn in the flesh” that kept him humble. Instead of removing it, God assured him that His grace was sufficient.
• Lesson: God’s power is most visible when we recognize our weakness and rely on Him.

b) Gideon and the 300 Soldiers
• Judges 6:15-16 – Gideon considered himself the least, yet God chose him to lead Israel to victory with only 300 men.
• Lesson: God often works through the unlikely to show that victory comes from Him.

c) Moses’ Inability and God’s Strength
• Exodus 4:10-12 – Moses felt inadequate because of his speech, but God assured him, “I will be with your mouth.”
• Lesson: God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called.

d) The Weak Made Strong in Hebrews 11
• Hebrews 11:34 – “Out of weakness were made strong.” Many heroes of faith started as weak individuals but found strength through God.
• Lesson: Faith in God transforms weakness into strength.

2. Jesus: The Ultimate Example
• Philippians 2:7-8 – Jesus humbled Himself, taking the form of a servant, yet through His apparent weakness (the cross), He achieved the greatest victory.
• Lesson: True strength comes from surrender and reliance on God.

3. Ellen G. White on Strength in Weakness

a) Dependence on God

“It is when we feel weak and helpless that Jesus is our strength. Then He clings to us as we cling to Him.” – (The Desire of Ages, p. 329)
• Lesson: Our greatest spiritual growth happens when we acknowledge our dependence on Christ.

b) Trials Build Strength

“It is a law both of the intellectual and the spiritual nature that by beholding we become changed. The mind gradually adapts itself to the subjects upon which it is allowed to dwell.” – (The Great Controversy, p. 555)
• Lesson: When we focus on Christ rather than our weaknesses, we are transformed into His strength.

c) The Humble Are Lifted Up

“God does not choose for His work men of self-confidence and self-sufficiency. The truly weak, who trust wholly in Him, will be made strong.” – (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 154)
• Lesson: God uses humble vessels so that His power can be displayed through them.

4. Application: How to Find Strength in Weakness

a) Acknowledge Your Weakness
• Don’t rely on human strength; confess your need for God daily. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

b) Depend on God’s Power
• Pray for strength through the Holy Spirit. (Isaiah 40:29-31)

c) Embrace Trials as Growth Opportunities
• Consider difficulties as a way to develop perseverance. (James 1:2-4)

d) Serve with a Humble Heart
• Let God work through you despite your limitations. (1 Corinthians 1:27-29)

Conclusion

Strength is not found in self-reliance but in total dependence on God. The weak become strong when they lean on Him, just as Paul, Moses, and many others did. Jesus Himself demonstrated that true power is found in humility and surrender to God’s will.

Final Thought:
“The very trials that test our faith most severely and make it seem that God has forsaken us, are designed to lead us closer to Christ.” – (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 129)

Reflection Question:
• In what area of your life do you need to rely more on God’s strength rather than your own?
