Hebrews 2
Question: Does the word need miracles before a person can believe? No God knows each individual’s heart and how to reach it the way He wants it.
1-2 This chapter is continuing on from chapter 1, what was just said, take heed of it, don’t drift from the truth. If the word delivered to the people by the angels stood steadfast (it came to pass) and those who obeyed or disobeyed received a just reward, how much more should the words delivered by the Lord Himself, and confirmed by those who heard Him (disciples and other eye-witnesses) be received (how shall those who disobey/disregard this escape the just judgement). Eg. If a message is delivered by someone sent by the king is important to the citizens, how much more important is it if it’s coming from the king himself.
4-7 They have no reason to be ignorant as He even supported His words by miracles, signs and wonders and through His disciples this message is continued (the same thing Jesus was doing, the disciples continued- the word supported by various miracles and gifts if the Holy Spirit). The earth to come is not going to be given to angels but humans, but what is man…? (Humility/amazement). But we’ve been crowned with glory and honor (in His image) and been given authority over creation (like He ultimate authority-He made us like Him).
8-9 He put all things under us, leaving nothing, but we don’t see the completeness of the dominion given to us yet. Jesus taking the form of man was made a little lower than the angels and going through suffering, death, seeing the glory that was set before Him. (And although we don’t yet see how we have this dominion, we see Jesus going through suffering and then receives this honor, by seeing this we too can see the path we will follow).
10-11 It was fitting for Him to go through the suffering in order to restore us, that may follow the steps He has taken (perfected through suffering). Jesus is not ashamed to call us His brethren (Mark 3:33-35- our sanctifier and us are one).
12-13 Jesus is identifying with us, as His brethren, not ashamed, declaring God’s name to us and as His children, whom the Father had given to Him.
14-15 Jesus came in our form (flesh and blood) and died, why? To pay our debt, why? Wages of sin=death, so He did this by destroying him who had the power of death (satan) why did he have this power? Because he could accuse using the claim (the wage so of sin is death) and his claim was right, but Jesus took these keys from Him, his power removed, how? Bcz Jesus died and payed that debt, so he no longer has the weapon of accusation- the accuser of thy brethren. - with Judas, this weapon was used against him, he killed himself cz he had no word of God to hold onto, whereas Peter who did an even worse thing repented bcz he remembered the words of Christ. And because of His sacrifice, He freed us from fear of death cz we have the hope of life after death.
16-17 Jesus didn’t come for the fallen angels, but humanity, Abraham’s seed (those of faith, the sick are the ones in need of a doctor, not the well). Fallen angels don’t see they’re unwell. Jesus had to come and take our form, go through what we go through, and through that, we know that He understands our trials etc- that He might be merciful. And to be a High-priest He had to be sinless, so He went through it, paid that debt for sin, made things right with God. And could then be merciful towards us seeing our short-comings and be a Faithful High-Priest- pleasing on our behalf (having understood what we go through).
18 He understands temptation from experience and therefore is able to help us who are now going through it.
Application:
Without Jesus, we have no hope
Apply the word of God throughout our life (so satan can have no key/power over us)
Follow in the footsteps of Jesus to reach where He reached
Know that after the suffering, there is victory/hope
Suffering shapes us into the image He wants us to be
Grateful to God for identifying with us and how we’re so dear to Him although so unworthy- what is man?
