1 Corinthians Questions & Summary

Summary: Paul starts of by encouraging us to imitate him as he Christ, as long as someone is following Christ, it’s safe to copy their behaviour- if they’re copying Jesus’. Then he’s commending them for remembering him and what he taught em. Then he moves on to head and no head covering: showing that the individual recognises authority: head of man is Christ, head of woman is man and head of Christ is God. When a man is praying or prophesying (speaking under inspiration of God) with head covered brings to Christ his head- cz he’s not recognising the authority above home. And if a woman prays or prophesies with her head uncovered, she also dishonours her head (the man) - therefore not recognising the whole hierarchy. If having her her shaved is shameful to her, so should having her head uncovered during the reverent time of prayer and prophesying. But he reminds them that both the man and woman need each other. Even in nature man having long hair is dishonourable whereas a woman should have long hair- the covering for her head. The theme then switches to proper conduct during communion. He says they approach communion in an irreverent manner which is bad because communion reminds us of the great price paid for us (17-22). Then from 23-34 it shows the proper conduct of the Lord’s supper- coming in a reverent manner and doing as Jesus did praying over each one and taking it in His remembrance- proclaiming his death and coming. Whoever does it irreverently will be judged (sicknesses etc). Don’t do it for the sake of it, think about what you’re doing, and have reverence. Do whatever u gotta do to prepare for communion, humble your heart n come with reverence. If we take caution n judge ourselves before partaking in it, then there won’t be any need for judgement for u, ur conscience is good. (Cz it sounds like they just came together for the vibes, to eat etc- not focusing on the purpose of communion) Short summary: 1 Corinthians 11 teaches recognising and respecting God’s order and authority, both in relationships (headship) and in worship (especially communion), and expressing that with reverence.
