1 Corinthians Questions & Summary

Summary: Paul starts off by connecting the new chapter with the last. Reminding us to pursue love and desire spiritual gifts. But especially the gift of prophesy. Verse 3 explains why we should want prophecy the most: because it edifies others which is his whole point throughout the previous chapters- so he’s landing his point. He then compares prophecy with tongues, saying prophecy is more important. Why? Because tongues (different languages) won’t be understood and therefore useless (without interpretation). He then follows on by saying tongues need interpretation. He isn’t saying tongues shouldn’t be spoken but he pushes order cz God is not the author of confusion but order. He says 3 are the most that can speak, and one by one, ONLY with an interpreter. Let our only motive for wanting to speak in tongues or any other gift(should be for benefiting the body of Christ). He then says to be spiritually mature (not babes) but in sin to be babes (innocent and not knowing).21 God uses people to speak in the languages of those different people but even so they won’t listen. 22 tongues are a sign for unbelievers cz them seeing that those who wouldn’t naturally be able to speak their language normally when they do, they see the power of God, so it draws em in. If an unbeliever comes in and sees everyone speaking in tongues hues they’ll think everyone is out of their mind, but if they come in and see individuals prophesying (speaking under the Holy’s Spirit’s inspiration) and something convicts them- that applies to them personally, they will know that the power of God is there. He then highlights the importance of order in the church. 32 highlights that the spirit of a person is subject to them, so a person can’t say “oh I’m on the spirit so I can’t control it” no if a person needs to speak, you can stop it, and they speak, then u continue after. God is a God of order. 34-40 highlights the importance of order in the church- reminding women to stay silent in the church (cz back then the men and women sat on different sides-and women would be yelling across the room to their husbands) so Paul is telling em to keep silent and ask questions at home (he didn’t mention men cz women were the ones who were seen with this issue). So in summary order and edification of the church.
