1 Corinthians Questions & Summary

Summary: Paul starts off by reminding them of the gospel message (their belief in Christ Jesus). That their salvation is through Jesus Christ. That Christ came, died for our sins, and raised again- according to the scriptures. He was also seen by many after He resurrected (Peter, the other apostles, the 500 that saw Him at once, and also Paul- so all these are witnesses of His resurrection. Some that have seen Jesus as witnesses to His resurrection have passed away and some still alive (at the time Paul wrote this). And Paul saw him last. He then humbles himself seeing himself lower than the apostles cz he persecuted the church but by the grace of God he changed and the grace was not in vain- he did so much for the cause of Christ. He then gets to the point (cz some were saying that people that die don’t rise) if this is the case, then Christ didn’t rise (but he did cz Paul had just mentioned evidence in the opening statement). If he hadn’t, all their work in the Lord and hope was all for nothing, suffering for Christ etc- if that’s the case “let’s all eat and drink, fro tomorrow we die” - like live life however we please. But no, this isn’t the case, Christ is risen n cz of that He’s the first fruit of those dead that He will resurrect later. Just as man brought death, the same way, must Man bring resurrection. In Adam, all die, even so in Christ the second Adam (here to be man and do things the right way unlike how Adam messed up) even so in Christ all shall be made alive. After those dead in Christ rise, then those alive go up- He conquers (puts an end to death) no more other authority or rule, only Him- every knee will bow. Vs 26-28 says all things are put under Christ’s authority, so all is under Christ but the Father who has put it all under Him. Vs 29 is using a practice they did as an example (being baptised on behalf of a dead believer - into Christ) if Christ didn’t rise, there’s no point, if Jesus don’t rise, all they were going though was for nothing, suffering, all for Christ, all for nothing. If that’s the case they might as well live whoever they want “eat and drink, for tomorrow we die”. 33 don’t be deceived, bad company corrupts good habits/character- like don’t listen to those who are saying there is no resurrection. 34 is saying wake up, don’t listen to falsehood, u know better, that’s shameful that u would believe such a thing. He then starts off explain the concept of someone being resurrected. He explains that the same way a plant when sown dies and comes back in a different form, the same we die with these bodies and resurrect to perfect immortal bodies. He explains the different flesh- an animal’s and a person’s. “There are also things up in the sky that are different from the things here on the earth. The things in the sky are beautiful in a different way from the things on the earth. The sun is beautiful in a special way. The moon is also beautiful in a special way, but it is different from the sun. The stars are beautiful too. Each star is beautiful in its own special way. It will be like that when God raises a dead person to a new life. We bury the dead person's body in the ground and it becomes spoiled. But when God raises it up, it will live for ever. When we bury the body, it is not beautiful. But when God raises it up, it will be very beautiful. When we bury the body, it is weak. But when God raises it, it will be strong. What we bury in the ground is a human body. But the body that God will raise up is a spiritual body. There is a human body that belongs to this earth. There also has to be a spiritual body that belongs to heaven.”. So basically we will get a new, perfect, complete (living) bodies after death. 45 Adam represents mortal man and Christ the second Adam represents immortal. As we had the image of Adam (mortal) we ca than have the image of Christ (immortal). 50 The image that dies (1st Adam-sinful) can’t have the kingdom of heaven, it has to be changed to (not sinful). 51 not everyone will die, some will still be alive when Jesus returns, but ALL will receive the new body (not sinful) before going to heaven. It’ll happen instantly at His return, when we’re caught up to heaven with Jesus. For this mortal but put on immortality, and corruptible to incorruptible to go back with Jesus where there is no corruption. When that happens then death is swallowed up- the work of redemption complete. The last enemy destroyed is death: death no longer has its sting(sin) and strength of the sin is the law, Jesus overcame by his perfect life - meeting the requirements law. So thank God for Jesus. Paul then ends the chapter by encouraging us to stay strong, steadfast- loyal, immovable, stay busy about our Father’s business. None of this will be in vain, why? Because the dead rise, there’s life after death- eternal life with Jesus and the Father and all the angels and all the saints.
