1 Thessalonians Chapter Notes

Summary: Verse 1: Paul starts with a greeting from himself along with those with him (Tim and Silas) Blesses them with grace (grace comes first) before peace- from God. 2: Paul is thankful for them and always praying for them (he doesn’t only preach to them but also prays for them continually). 3: Paul reminds them that their spiritual growth is not going unnoticed- their faith has produced works, labour of love (love causing them to do what they do:love in action), and patience of hope (because of their hope, they endured, had patience)- and all this centred in Christ before God the Father. 4: knowing (assurance of salvation as God’s elected), elected:set apart, all are called but not all elected cz you gotta accept before being set apart, by responding to the calling. 5: The words they shared were not coming from them (in their wisdom) but they were led by the Holy Spirit in power (bcz if the word didn’t come with this power from God, it would’ve just been like any other motivational speaking/excellent perfromance) and in much assurance- they were sure in what they were sharing- which would be seen by them (cz if you believe in something, you show it/reflect it- cz they lived by this- willing to go through persecution, using his own means to support the work etc). 6: Because of this, you became followers- they experienced this power that they came in (the Holy Spirit and also made the decision to follow them and Lord). Although they knew the price that comes with it (much affliction), them seeing how sure It was, received it, with the joy of the Holy Spirit. 7: Their response to the gospel became an example to others (all those in Macedonia and Achaia). 8: they became a living testimony (of what happens to a genuine conversion- you can’t hide it- the word of the Lord sounds forth though you-your character, lifestyle- they became a living sermon)- and it was like a ripple effect. 9: Their transformation (turned from idols, like fully turned, a radical change- truly repented cz repentance means turning away from sin-this means going one path then turning to the complete opposite) was seen by those people and they reported to Paul, what his entry their did- they turned form idols to the loving God, so Paul didn’t even have to say anything, cz that itself did the speaking. Side-note: even those who turn from God, they make turn and go the opposite direction. Idol: isn’t limited to a statue and bowing down to it It’s whatever is your main priority - anything you love more than God, obey, trust more than God etc more than God. Whatever has your heart, attention, entertainment, looks and time- is your idol- anything- money, person whatever. 10: After receiving this faith, they now have hope, looking toward Jesus’ coming, the One Whom died for them and rose, and who delivered them from the wrath to come (wrath:wages of sin=death), justified by His blood so we’re saved from the coming wrath.
