1 Thessalonians Chapter Notes

Summary: Summary: 1-2 Continuing from chapter 3, Paul encouraging them to continue what Thyre doing (walking faithfully with God) but its to be more and more- growing more in Christ 3-5 Our sanctification (holiness, set apart, being transformed into God’s character) is the will of God, any sexual practice outside of marriage should be abstained from, stay away from it, God should govern our bodies. Every believer must learn to be in control of their own bodies, managing it to honour God (making sure we eat well, exercise etc- for God’s glory), not in passion of lust like the Gentiles (people who don’t believe God) - cz they have no authoritative standard or principle so they do whatever they want, whereas we have standard and we are under God’s authority, so we follow that . 6-8 This action does harm not only to you but the other individual, cz ur causing them to sin- in the context of cheating- ur destroying family relationships, trust, betrayal etc, and in general, your violating someone who isn’t your wife/or husband- who have a future wife or husband- so its impacted their future relationship. God avenges those who do this, God didn’t call us to live like this but live holy lives. 8 those who reject this councils reject God, cz he said it through them (given him the Holy Spirit). 9-12 Concerning loving one another, it’s not taught my man, it comes naturally from God. That love should continuing growing, more and more. Aspire to lead a quiet life, don’t be a busy body, mind your business. (This counsel saves us from unnecessary drama) don’t be in things that don’t concern you, don’t be putting your business out there. (Just lead a quiet life). And work for with your own hands (don’t look for handovers) work to earn a living. This makes the gospel more attractive and advances- plus a peaceful life and having the necessities. - you’re in your own circle with God, so you lack nothing- u aren’t depending on anyone but God 13-14 Paul doesn’t want them to be uninformed about the state of the dead, lest they be sorrowful like those who have no hope, if we believe Jesus died and rose, so will those who fall asleep, He will resurrect them, so we shouldn’t be sorrowful as hopeless people. The same way a person sleeping we let em sleep cz we know thyre gonna wake up in the morning, even though we want em awake to engage with us, we let em sleep knowing that we will see them in the morning. Also as it gets dark we too wanna sleep, so we can wake up with them in the morning (as life gets hard we want to rest too in the grave waiting for resection). With Jesus and laz, when they told Him he died, Jesus said He is sleeping (like move on, he is just sleeping- like there’s nothing to be sorrowful about cz he is gonna wake up/ressurect) we aren’t sad cz thyre dying cz we know they will rescue, we’re sad cz of the impact of them leaving has on us. (Read John 11:11-14) Jesus wasn’t sorrowful about him dying cz He knew that’s not the end, but he was later sad cz of the hurt of separation from a loved one). 15-18 When Jesus comes back, we won’t precede those dead, they will rise/resurrect, then the righteous dead and alive will both be caught up together.
