1 Timothy Study Notes

Summary: 1-2 Paul starts off by greeting Timothy who he sees like a son, wishing him grace, mercy and peace. 3-7 so he asks him to stay in Ephesus to keep the gospel unaltered by false teachers. To tell the people to not get carried away with teachers using fables and genealogies for the sake of debates- not bringing edification but disputes- which may sound religious but not applicable or able to save em (like the doctrine of being saved cz of being descendants of Abraham) - Christ and Him alone. Reminding them to focus on love, not idle talks like clans, descendant of Abraham etc, thinking they know what thyre teaching but they don’t. 8-11 saying the law is good if used in alignment with God’s purpose and not own motives. The law for the righteous is not needed cz they naturally keep it (ur not gonna tell someone who doesn’t steal to not steal, but ur gonna tell someone who steals not to) so the law is there for the lawbreakers- exposing rebellion- then lists lawless giving and eve try thing contrary to the word of God. He was to keep them walking in the way as God had entrusted him to. Paul is thankful to God for entrusting him with ministry although he was previously actively working God, and God was merciful and exceedingly gracious to him in calling him and turning his life around. “Iri jambo ni iryo kwizerwa rikwiriye kwemerwa rwose, yuko Kristo Yesu yazanywe mu isi no gukiza abanyabyaha, muri bo ni jye w'imbere.” 1 Timoteyo 1:15 BYSB God’s mercy to Paul and us demonstrates His and long suffering, mercifulness towards us. God’s mercy towards Paul can show everyone else that they aren’t far gone, they can all come to Jesus, their story can be rewritten. Then gives glory to God. God although can use perfect angels, uses us, and it shows His character, how merciful and long suffering and loving He is. 18-20 Paul is encouraging Tim, to let that calling which he was given motivate him to keep fighting, being string in the faith and continuing to stand. Telling him not to be like others and gives example of ones who’ve fallen away from their faith, who he let suffer the consequences of their decision so they learn to do what is right.
