Summary: If a man wants to be a bishop (overseer/pastor/shepherd- he’s overseeing what’s going on in the church- acts 20:17,28, shepherding them) - acts 20 has the context of Ephesians, where Tim is right now and Paul is writing to him while he is there. If a man wants this position, it’s a good thing. 2-3from verse 2 it starts listing the qualities of a bishop (Titus 1:7)- are to be blameless (good report), sober-minded (mind not clouded by other things, but having sound judgement), good behaviour (witwara neza before man and God), hospitable (welcoming- 1 Peter 4:9), able to each ( have the skill- to teach), not given to wine (don’t drink), not violent, not greedy for money- cz the love of money is the root of all evil, not quarrelsome (no mahane, looking for fights), not covetous (content). It just covered the public perspective, now looking inside. This individual rules their house well, their kids are brought up in the ways of God, taught to submit to authority- God, cz how can they lead the church if they can’t lead their home, can’t be a new convert/baby christian - cz they can easily get prideful and fall, like satan fell. They must have a good record/report- those who know you- have a good report about you, must have a good testimony. 8-9 Same standard for deacons, they too must reverent (bariyubaha), not hypocritical- practicing what they preach, don’t say one thing and then say another- double tongued, not given to much wine (self control), not greedy for money, having pure conscience before God and man (ntacyagushinja) 10-13 Test them before electing them- you shall know them by their fruits. Likewise women/wives are supposed to have these characteristics too- pure and acceptable- women taking part in church also are to meet this (romans 16:1- Phoebe, a servant, servant: deaconess?) those living faithfully, with good standing, grows your faith, and you can confidently share your faith (ntakigushinja)- cz if you aren’t living by what you preach, you aren’t as bold sharing it cz u yourself know, you’re guilty somewhere. 14-16 Paul is writing this to give them instructions on how to conduct themselves in the house of God/ church of God (people- body of Christ- 1 Peter 2:5) the pillar of truth- the household- body of Christ holds the truth. Our belief- God came and manifested in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen by all, preached to all, we believed in Him and He returned to heaven.
