1 Timothy Study Notes

Summary: 1-2 The Holy Spirit clearly says that in the later days, many will turn from the truth/faith, turning to lies, hypocrisy, deceiving spirit and doctrines of demons (false teachings/contrary to God’s word) (2 thes:1-5 also talks about this). And because of the continual rejection of the conniving voice, they no longer hear it or feel bad about sins anymore, no longer convicted. 3 Forbidding to marry, commanding to abstain from foods etc - now that they’ve turned to deceiving spirits, they’re turning to other ‘methods’ of salvation, trine save self- via diet, man made-rules like not marrying etc. also bc they believed it was the end times so they shouldn’t be marryin etc. But Jesus is the only way to be saved. Nothing we eat makes us anymore righteous or unrighteous- we eat healthy cz our body is His temple, and He commands us to look after it. Those who destroy the temple God will destroy, we’re to look after our bodies, but it’s not what save us. 4-5 in this context, all food is good, every creature is good, don’t refuse- as long as it’s approved by the word of God and prayed over (vs4-5). 6-7 A good minister teaches the truth whether its liked or not, and also lives by it. Reject fabels, myths, superstitious stories, any tales that are contrary to the bible, even if its coming from respected individuals. 8-9 Physical training benefits this present life whereas spiritual training not only benefits this life but the life to come, and God-likeness positively impacts every aspect of our lives. 9-11 The word of God, a faithful saying, it’s reliable and because we believe, we’re willing to suffer reproach, cz we trust in the living God, who’s the saviour of all men. These things teach and command- teach the word of God. Him being young meant people were most likely gonna look down on him, so Paul was telling him to not be put down by this, but to earn respect by the way he carries himself, being an example to them, conducting himself in word, love, in spirit (attitude) in faith (ppl seeing you living in a trusting relationship with God), in purity (good behaviour/moral). 13-14 Paul then encourages Tim to read the word to them and encourage them strongly to live by it. Don’t neglect the gift given to you by The Holy Spirit, use it to serve the body/church of Christ. 15 if we want our spiritual growth to be evident: we gotta meditate on the word of God (thy word have I hidden in my heart that I may not sin against You psalms 119:11), sanctify them in the truth, thy word is truth - John 17:17), our minds= our character, if we mediate on the word of God, giving ourself fully, we’ll be transformed, coming out of His presence shining just like Moses did. 16 Be careful, take heed, examine self, and what self believes, and live by the truth, and in doing this, those who hear you teach, and see you living it out will be converted, not only saving yourself but them too.
