1 Timothy Study Notes

Summary: 1-2 Servants/employees are to submit, honour and respect those they are under, that they may not blaspheme the name of God (cz when someone is leading a double life or not living as they profess, others can turn and say, “this person calling themselves christian and doing abc”- so God’s name is blasphemed this way. Also even if that person over you is a fellow believer, submit and honour them even more, don’t be too familiar. And that believer boss will benefit the brethren- helping them out in need. 3-5 False teacher: rejects thus says the Lord, thyre proud, they like arguing- getting into disputes, evil suspicions, their motivation is to gain something. From these type people withdraw. 6-8 Godliness with contentment is great gain- to be satisfied with what we have, our contentment not being circumstantial, knowing that we brought nothing in this world (God gives it all) and we will take nothing with us when we die (so we should be so immersed in gaining materialistic things). 9-10 The love of money is the root of all evil, starts with wanting money, pursuing It and then all other lusts. And this comes from not being content. Many have left the faith because of this, greed for money, it starts small then takes over, and now it has all your focus and energy- idol, taking the place of God. 11-12 But us, we’re to flee from this, same way we’re to flee sexual immorality (with seriousness) cz the same way we aren’t gonna say lemme stay, I can resist sexual immorality (we’re weak, we will fall) we’re to haver this attitude towards love for money, cz we will fall if we stay. So we’re to flee and instead pursue (chase) these things (instead do pursuing temporary things like money) pursue godliness, faith, patience, gentleness. Instead focus on fighting this good fight of faith. Hold onto this firmly, not letting go, as we have witnesses cheering us on. 13-16 Paul then urges us to remain faithful and witnessing, as Jesus, keeping His commandment, remaining blameless, till he comes. He then gives glory to God 17-19 Those who are rich in this age, to not be arrogant, putting their trust in riches, but instead to put their trust in God, and share what God has given to others in need, and in doing this, you’re also storing up your treasure in heaven by doing this, you’re holding on to eternal life- cz if treasure is stored up in heaven, your heart is also in heaven, it’s not looking at earthly things, so bcz your heart is in heaven, you’re laying hold on eternal life. 20-21 Paul then ends the letter with advising Tim, telling him to guard what was given to him (the truth/gospel) avoiding any false teachings which contradict the truth, don’t let go of the truth, hold on to it, guard it. Don’t look at these things, cz some have started from the faith by getting caught in these. Then he blesses him, grace be with you, amen.
