Philemon: Questions & Answers

1. Why does Paul appeal through love instead of commanding Philemon? (8–9, 14) He wants Philemon’s goodness to be willing. Forgiveness and kindness should come from a heart shaped by love, rather than pressure. 2. Why should Philemon receive Onesimus differently now? (10–16) Onesimus has become a believer. Paul asks Philemon to look beyond their past and receive him as a beloved brother in Christ. 3. What does Paul’s offer to pay Onesimus’s debt show? (17–19) Love is willing to act and bear a cost for another person. Paul does more than ask for reconciliation; he offers to help remove what stands in its way. 4. How can something good come from a painful separation? (15–16) Paul suggests that Onesimus’s absence may have opened the way for a lasting relationship in Christ. A painful past can become an opportunity for change and reconciliation. 5. What should we take from this letter? Forgive as we have been forgiven, treat others as family in Christ, help carry their burdens, and give changed people room for a fresh start.
