John vs. Judas: A Spiritual Contrast
Category John the Beloved Judas Iscariot
Call to Discipleship John left everything immediately to follow Christ (Matthew 4:21–22). Judas was also chosen by Christ (Luke 6:13–16), but not fully surrendered.
Character at First Impulsive, proud, ambitious (“son of thunder” – Mark 3:17). Seemed loyal and capable, but secretly selfish and greedy.
Growth Process Gradually transformed by Christ’s love—became gentle, humble, and selfless. Refused to surrender selfish desires—grew more hardened and deceitful.
View of Jesus Loved Jesus deeply, stayed close to Him, leaned on His breast at the Last Supper (John 13:23). Followed Jesus outwardly but criticized and betrayed Him (John 12:4–6; Matt. 26:15).
Reaction to Correction Accepted rebuke and changed (e.g., Luke 9:54–55). Resented correction—especially about money (Matt. 26:8–14).
End Result Became the “apostle of love” and lived to write the Gospel, epistles, and Revelation. Betrayed Christ, died in guilt and despair (Matt. 27:5).
⸻
1. Starting Points: Both Were Called by Jesus
• John and Judas were personally called by Christ.
Bible:
• “He called to Him those He wanted, and they came to Him.” — Mark 3:13
• “And Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.” — Luke 6:16
Ellen G. White:
“Judas was not insensible to the beauty of the character of Christ… but he did not surrender himself to God.”
— Desire of Ages, p. 716
⸻
2. Their Hidden Motives: John Opened His Heart, Judas Hid His
• John had faults but was teachable.
• Judas had ambition and greed, but covered it with religious appearance.
Bible:
• “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name…” (John in Luke 9:49)
• “He was a thief…” — John 12:6
Ellen G. White:
“John warred earnestly against his faults… under the transforming influence of Christ’s love he became meek and lowly of heart.” — AA, p. 557
“Judas flattered himself that he was in no danger of failing.” — DA, p. 295
⸻
3. How They Related to Christ
• John leaned on Jesus’ breast and called himself “the disciple whom Jesus loved.”
• Judas called Jesus “Rabbi,” but not “Lord” (Matt. 26:25).
Bible:
• “One of His disciples… whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to Him.” — John 13:23
• ”‘Surely it is not I, Rabbi?’ Jesus said, ‘You have said so.’” — Matt. 26:25
Ellen G. White:
“John clung to Christ as the vine clings to the tree… His was a sacred fellowship with Jesus.” — DA, p. 292
“Judas had opened the door of his heart, the tempter entered.” — DA, p. 295
⸻
4. Their Reaction to Mary’s Act of Devotion
Mary anointed Jesus’ feet.
• John saw it as beautiful worship.
• Judas called it wasteful.
Bible:
• “The house was filled with the fragrance…” — John 12:3
• “Why this waste?” — Matthew 26:8
Ellen G. White:
“It was Judas who had instigated the criticism…” — DA, p. 559
“John could appreciate the love of Christ…” — DA, p. 292
⸻
5. Their Legacy
• John lived a long life of faithful ministry and was given visions of Heaven.
• Judas died by suicide, filled with regret, not repentance.
Bible:
• “Write what you see in a book…” — Revelation 1:11
• “He went out and hanged himself.” — Matt. 27:5
Ellen G. White:
“John lived to see the gospel go far and wide… He had a testimony that bore power.” — AA, p. 568
“His confession was forced from his guilty soul… He felt no deep, heart-breaking grief.” — DA, p. 723

Final Spiritual Lessons
John Judas Lesson
Loved Christ deeply Loved self more Who do I love more: Jesus or myself?
Surrendered daily Held back sin Am I hiding anything from Jesus?
Transformed by grace Hardened by pride Am I letting Christ change me, or resisting?
Served Christ humbly Used Christ selfishly Do I serve Christ or use Him for gain?
Lived in faith, died in hope Died in guilt, without hope What will my spiritual legacy be?
⸻
Conclusion: The Choice Between Two Paths
“The history of Judas presents the sad ending of a life that might have been honored of God.” — DA, p. 716
“John pressed close to Jesus. Through his association with the Master, he became like Him in character.” — AA, p. 557
Today, we choose who we become. Will we open our hearts fully to Christ as John did—or cling to self like Judas?
