NEGLECT

**What is neglect? By definition the word is: (**fail to care for properly), (to leave undone or unattended to especially through carelessness) one of it’s synonyms is (DISREGARD)

When it comes to God tho it’s not always open rebellion but Often it’s slow, quiet, “life got busy” drifting away slowly.
It’s the sin of leaving things undone especially what is most important: communion with God, obedience, repentance, love, justice, and faith. (unattended priorities)

Hebrews 2:1–3 — *“*We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. ** **For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him”.

“The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought.” Steps to Christ, p. 43

Neglect is frequently self winning by default: not through loud choices, but through unchallenged habits.

Why Neglect Is One of Satan’s Most Successful Traps now and then

Because neglect:
Doesn’t feel like “big sin.”
Keeps a religious image (you can still “believe” while drifting).
Hardens the heart gradually.
Starves faith (no prayer, no Word, no obedience = weak soul).

•	**“Satan well knows that all whom he can lead to neglect prayer and the searching of the Scriptures, will be overcome.”**

The Great Controversy, p. 519
neglect can become the doorway to defeat.

The Main Ways WE Neglect God

Prayer and Secret Communion

A prayer-less life is a life that slowly becomes self-powerd.

	•	1 Thessalonians 5:17 — “Pray without ceasing.”
	•	Luke 18:1 “Men always ought to pray and not lose heart.”

	•	Matthew 6:6 secret prayer as the core of real religion

	•	John 15:5 “Without Me you can do nothing.”
	•	Psalm 63:1 thirst for God as normal spirituality
	•	Daniel 6:10 Daniel prayed consistently even under threat

Egs:

The disciples in Gethsemane
• Matthew 26:40–41
they slept when Jesus said “watch and pray.”
They didn’t “hate God.” They were tired. But neglect in the crucial hour made them unready. - if they had prayed Peter would’ve most likely not failed the test

Samson
• Judges 16:20
“He did not know that the Lord had departed from him.”

That’s neglect in its most terrifying form: drifting until you don’t even realize you’re powerless.

Some of the ways we neglect prayer
“I’ll pray later” that turns into never
Replacing prayer with scrolling, entertainment, constant distractions
Only praying when in trouble or sick

NEGLECTING SCRIPTURE

It matters because - Faith is sustained by truth.
• Romans 10:17 — “Faith comes by hearing… the word of God.”
• Psalm 119:105 — “Your word is a lamp…”
• John 17:17 — “Your word is truth.”

Egs

Israel repeatedly forgot
Judges 2:10–12 — new generation “did not know the Lord… they forsook.”
Neglect leads to forgetting, then to forsaking.

** Jesus against Satan in the wilderness**
Matthew 4:1–11 — Jesus answered with “It is written.”
Neglect of Scripture leaves you with no sword.

Modern ways of neglecting the Word
Only consuming “clips” and quotes, not studying deeply
Avoiding hard verses that confront lifestyle
Treating sermons as substitutes for personal study
Neglecting obedience to what we already know

Neglect of Obedience (Knowing but Not Doing)

Neglect is not only just the lack of devotion it’s also refusing to act on light.

James 1:22 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

John 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
Ecclesiastes 12:13–14 (fear God and keep His commandments)

More egs:

Saul
• 1 Samuel 15:22–23 — partial obedience is disobedience.
Saul “did something,” but he neglected exact obedience.

The foolish builder
• Matthew 7:26–27 hears and does not do; collapse comes.

Modern ways of neglecting by obedience
,Selective Christianity obeying what’s convenient to self
,Excusing sin with “God understands” without repentance
	.Treating conviction as optional
...Keeping secret sin while maintaining public religion

**Neglect of Repentance **

Proverbs 28:13 "He who covers his sins will not prosper”

1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Acts 3:19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord

Psalm 32:3–5 (TOO-LONG)(moral of the story don't be silent)

Egs: regarding the topic——

David before confession
Psalm 51 (A Prayer of Repentance) + 2 Samuel 11–12 (the sin and confrontation through Nathan)

David [neglected repentance until confronted, and it costed deeply.]

Felix
• Acts 24:25 “Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.”

For nowadays[
Hiding sin; managing appearances
Confessing generally but not forsaking specifically
Confusing remorse with repentance
“I’ll change after this or that ” (after specific events like birthday, new month, new year …)

**The SABBATH (the ordained time with God) **

neglect of holy time is a major symptom: God becomes “leftover.”
Foundation:-

Exodus 20:8–11 — “Remember the Sabbath day to keept it holy”... (REMEMBER)

Isaiah 58:13–14 delighting in God’s holy day
Ezekiel 20:12 & 20 Sabbath as a sign of sanctification

Mark 2:27 Sabbath is a gift from God to you & an opportunity to reunite

**Egs: **

Nehemiah confronting Sabbath neglect
Nehemiah 13:15–22 commerce replaced holiness.

**Nowadays ways of neglecting the sabbath **
Turning sacred hours into “catch-up” time
Filling worship time with entertainment- distractions, the time to nap “👀” or oversleep, go out with friends doing what has no connection to the day or appropriate for’

Neglect of Love, Mercy, and Justice (Putting belief in practice)

We must also check our character

Matthew 23:23 — “You have neglected the weightier matters: justice and mercy and faith.”
Micah 6:8 do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with God

Isaiah 1:16–17 stop evil, seek justice
James 1:27 pure religion cares for the poor
1 John 4:20 cannot love God while hating brother

More egs:

The priest and Levite
Luke 10:30–37 religious people neglected compassion. (All went by past the struggling guy)

Nowadays forms
Harshness at home while spiritual in public
Unforgivenes, bitterness, contempt
Ignoring the poor, lonely, oppressed
Neglecting reconciliation, apology, peacemaking

Neglect of Watchfulness / Spiritual Alertness

Neglect often appears as spiritual sleep.

**1 Peter 5:8** — be sober, vigilant
**Matthew 24:42–44** watch, for you do not know the hour
**Revelation 3:2–3** strengthen what remains; remember and repent

Modern ways
Living like there’s endless time

Ignoring repeated convictions
Playing with temptation without boundaries
Not **guarding inputs** (music, shows, friends, desires)

The Root Causes of Neglect Why WE CAN Drift

It does not just happen randomly it driven mostly by:

Love of self / comfort (**2 Timothy 3:1–5) ** lovers of self, lovers of pleasure

Lack of belief (not trusting God’s goodness)
Hebrews 3:12 evil heart of unbelief which can turn into departing
Numbers 13–14 Israel’s unbelief produced disobedience

Love of the world
1 John 2:15–16 the world-love crowds out Father-love

Familiarity without reverence
Matthew 13:57–58 familiarity made people reject Christ
Romans 2:4 despising goodness leads to a hardened heart

Delay; the “tomorrow” spirituality
Proverbs 27:1, Hebrews 3:15, Acts 24:25

We may be neglecting God when prayer and scripture fades to where sin feels manageable, worship feels empty, and comfort matters more to us than closeness with Him.

How to Stop Neglect and Return to God Biblical “Return Plan”

God doesn’t only expose neglect He heals it.

[STEPS TO CHRIST’ far from neglect ig NEW-YEARS RESOLUTION 😂]

Step 1: Recognize and name it
Lamentations 3:40 “Let us search and try our ways…”
Psalm 139:23–24 ask God to search your heart like Dawidi

Step 2: Remember and repent Revelation 2 formula
• Revelation 2:4–5 remember, repent, do first works
The cure for neglect is not emotional hype it’s returning to first works.

Step 3: Rebuild daily dependence (Exodus 16 principle)

Daily manna = daily relationship.
Exodus 16
Matthew 6:11 — daily bread
John 6:48–51 — Christ is the bread of life

****“God taught Israel that man must live in constant dependence upon Him.**”** *Patriarchs and Prophets*, p. 297

Step 4: Establish “non-negotiable” devotion a rule of life

Not legalism survival.
Daniel 6:10 consistent prayer habit
Mark 1:35 Jesus rose early to pray
Psalm 5:3 morning prayer

Step 5: Cut off the sources of distraction
Matthew 5:29–30 (principle: remove what causes falling)
Romans 13:14 make no provision for the flesh
Neglect often ends when we stop feeding the competing loves.

Step 6: Obey the next small thing God shows you
John 14:21 love shown by obedience
Luke 16:10 faithful in little
Small obedience breaks the power of drift.

Step 7: Stay connected to the body of Christ
Hebrews 10:24–25 don’t forsake assembling
Isolation multiplies neglect.

Bible)

If neglect is your struggle, God’s invitation is not condemnation it’s return.
Isaiah 55:6–7 seek while He may be found
Hosea 6:1–3 “Come, let us return”
James 4:8 draw near, and He will draw nearer
Luke 15 the Father runs to the returning son

SHORTLY____ Neglect is slowly drifting away from God by letting prayer, scripture, obedience, and love fade. not through open rebellion, but by being distracted and comfortable.

Review:
It really spoke to me, it’s reaffirming a lot of what I’ve been learning. One example: sometimes I wake up n leave devotional time till later, or do it when I feel like it, but I’ve been learning to not let my feelings be in control, and like I’ve been crying out to God for intimacy but when He wakes me up early (like 2-4AMs) I tell myself I’ll spend time with him later when I wake up. So I want the intimacy without the sacrifice 😭 so my new year res will be defs locking in with the early devotional times, hold me accountable yeah?😂 2nd example: sabbath: I’ve been turning my phone off during it so it’s just me n God, but I’ve also been napping, or like watching a sermon (n falling sleep to it😭) or watching a Christian movie to kill time, n not making use of the sacred time 😭 it’s like rules based- but I genuinely wanna enjoy n look forward to sabbath instead of seeing it as a rule. I wanna fall in love with God so obedience is easy n coming from the heart.
