The Work of the Holy Spirit in a Person’s Heart

1. The Holy Spirit Awakens the Heart

The human heart is spiritually asleep. People may know about God, but without the Holy Spirit, they do not feel their true condition. The first work of the Holy Spirit is to awake the heart and conscience.

  • “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” (John 16:8).

  • “The heart is deceitful above all things” (Jeremiah 17:9).

  • “Awake, you who sleep… and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14).

The conviction isn’t meant to take away hope but to open the eyes and see sin the way God does and then realize the need for a savior

  • “It is the Spirit of God that convicts of sin.” (Steps to Christ, p. 24)
  • “The conscience must be awakened.” (Steps to Christ, p. 29)
Without this work, no one would ever seek God seriously.

2. The Holy Spirit Draws the Heart to God

When the heart is awake we are lead to God through love, truth and kindness.
The Bible teaches that :

  • “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him” (John 6:44).
  • “The goodness of God leads you to repentance” (Romans 2:4).
  • “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you” (Jeremiah 31:3).

The desire to pray, to read the Bible, or to change one’s life does not come from self. But from the Spirit working on the heart.

  • “It is the Holy Spirit that draws the soul to Christ.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 175)
  • “God does not force the will. He leaves men free to choose.” (Steps to Christ, p. 43)
Every true step toward God is already evidence that the Spirit is working.

3. The Holy Spirit Brings Repentance

True repentance is not just feeling bad. It is a deep sorrow for sin because it has hurt God. This kind of repentance is a gift from the Holy Spirit.

  • “God has granted repentance that leads to life” (Acts 11:18).
  • “A broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise” (Psalm 51:17).
  • “They will look on Me whom they pierced, and they will mourn” (Zechariah 12:10).
  • “Repentance is the gift of Christ.” (Steps to Christ, p. 25)
  • “True repentance includes sorrow for sin and a turning away from it.” (Steps to Christ, p. 23)
Repentance is not the end of the journey; it is the door into a new life.

4. The Holy Spirit Gives a New Heart

The greatest work of the Holy Spirit is not fixing behavior but changing the heart. This is called the new birth.
Jesus said:

  • “Unless one is born of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5).

  • “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

  • “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36:26).
The old desires begin to lose their power, and new desires for God take their place.

  • “The change of heart is the result of the working of the Holy Spirit.” (Steps to Christ, p. 65)

  • “When the Spirit of God takes possession of the heart, it transforms the life.” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 419)
Christianity is not turning over a new leaf; it is receiving a new life.

5. The Holy Spirit Lives in the Believer

The Holy Spirit does not only work from the outside. When a person fully surrenders, the Spirit comes to live within.

  • “Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

  • “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).

  • “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16).
God now works from the inside out.

  • “The Holy Spirit abides in the heart of the believer.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 176)

  • “Through the Spirit, Christ dwells in us.” (Steps to Christ, p. 69)
This is the secret of a strong Christian life.

6. The Holy Spirit Guides Daily Life

The Christian life cannot be lived by human wisdom alone. The Holy Spirit guides thoughts, choices, and actions.

  • “As many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14).

  • “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it’” (Isaiah 30:21).

  • “Trust in the Lord… and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5–6).
The Spirit helps believers know what to do and what to avoid.

  • “The Holy Spirit will be given to all who ask for His guidance.” (Acts of the Apostles, p. 50)

  • “The Spirit guides into all truth.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 672)
    A Spirit-led life is a safe life.

7. The Holy Spirit Changes Character

The strongest proof of the Holy Spirit’s work is a changed character. The Spirit produces Christlike qualities in the life.

  • “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…” (Galatians 5:22–23).

  • “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2).

  • “He who began a good work in you will complete it” (Philippians 1:6).
These changes happen daily as the believer cooperates with the Spirit.

  • “The Holy Spirit implants the attributes of Christ.” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 384)

  • “Character is the only treasure we can take from this world to the next.” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 332)
The Spirit is preparing the soul for heaven.

8. The Holy Spirit Seals God’s People

The final work of the Holy Spirit is sealing the believer as God’s own.

  • “You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13).

  • “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed” (Ephesians 4:30).

  • “The Lord knows those who are His” (2 Timothy 2:19).
This seal shows loyalty to God and faithfulness to truth.

  • “The seal of God is placed upon those who remain loyal to God.” (Testimonies, Vol. 7, p. 150)

  • “Only those who overcome will be sealed.” (Early Writings, p. 71)
The Spirit prepares God’s people to stand firm to the end.

The Holy Spirit is not optional in the Christian life. With its presents the heart is awakened, drawn to God, brings repentance, gives a new heart, lives within the believer, guides daily life, changes character, and seals the soul for eternity.
A heart surrendered to the Holy Spirit becomes a place where God can dwell in

The Holy Spirit first awakens the heart and shows a person their true spiritual condition, because “He will convict the world of sin” (John 16:8). This conviction is not meant to destroy hope, but to open the eyes and help a person see their need for a Savior, for “it is the Spirit of God that convicts of sin” (Steps to Christ, p. 24). After the heart is awakened, the Holy Spirit gently draws the person to God through love and kindness, since “no one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him” (John 6:44). The desire to pray, read the Bible, or change one’s life comes from the Spirit working in the heart, not from self. The Holy Spirit then brings true repentance, which is a deep sorrow for sin and a turning away from it, for “God has granted repentance that leads to life” (Acts 11:18). Through the new birth, the Spirit gives a new heart and a new life, fulfilling God’s promise, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you” (Ezekiel 36:26). The Spirit then lives in the believer, guides daily decisions, and produces Christlike character. In the end, the Holy Spirit seals God’s faithful people for eternity, for “you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13).
