THE MESSAGE
Sermons, messages, and reflections from our notes.
Passages and reflections on 1 John 4:8, Exodus 20:1–2, 1 John 5:3.
God is love. 1 John 4:8
people often see the commandments of God as restrictions or as a list of requirements. (What is it really???)
The commandments are God’s love made practical, visible, and livable.
In understanding the law, we understand the heart of God.
Exodus 20:1–2: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt…”
Before giving a command, He declares:
“I am the God who saves you.”
Obedience is not the condition of salvation as it does not attain it for us but it is the response to salvation.
“The law of God, from its very nature, is unchangeable. It is a revelation of the will and the character of its Author.” ** Steps to Christ, p. 60**
If God’s character is love, then His law must be love in principle— and obedience must be love in practice.
** Satan misrepresents God’s character**
“From the beginning it has been Satan’s studied plan to misrepresent the character of God.” —Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 33
His goal is to make God appear harsh, unloving, and oppressive.
** Satan twists the law to appear burdensome**
1 John 5:3 — “His commandments are not burdensome.”
Satan wants people to see the law as a chain, not a guide to happiness.
Satan’s ultimate objective
John 10:10 — “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life.”
“Satan seeks to overthrow the law of God, and thus destroy man’s hope of eternal life.” —Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 33
He wants to turn people away from obedience and, therefore, from a saving relationship with God.
The deception is subtle
Satan convinces people that obedience is legalism, religion, or slavery rather than love.
“The purpose of Satan is to divert men from the path of obedience, to destroy their confidence in God, and to hide from them the true character of God.” —Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 33
Jesus Summarized the Law With One Word**: LOVE**
Matthew 22:37–40:
“On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Love to God. & Love to others.
Everything else is commentary.
Matthew 5:17:
“I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.”
Jesus fulfilled the law by living out God’s love perfectly.
“Love is the principle of God’s government in heaven and earth, and it must be the foundation of the Christian’s character.”
—Ellen G. White, Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 54
God’s government is built on love—
so His commandments must be expressions of love.
“The law is an expression of the thought of God; when received in Christ, it becomes our thought.” Mount of Blessing, p. 76
Obedience is not forced it is the outflow of a transformed heart.
Ezekiel 36:26–27:
“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes…”
Christian obedience is Spirit-empowered.
We do not obey to be saved we obey because we are being saved.
John 14:15:
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
Obedience is not the cause of love—
it is the result.
“Obedience—the service and allegiance of love—is the true sign of discipleship.”
Steps to Christ, p. 60
When love fills the heart, obedience becomes joy.
Without knowing God’s love, the law looks like a burden. But when we see the cross, obedience becomes privilege.
From Eden onward, Satan has claimed God’s law is restrictive. But the law protects freedom, peace, and joy.
“The law of love being the foundation of the government of God, the happiness of all created beings depended upon their perfect accord with its great principles of righteousness.” Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 34
Happiness is found when our lives harmonize with God’s law of love.
Love grows by relationship. As we see His love, we imitate it.
Romans 5:5:
“The love of God is poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.”
Patience. Forgiveness. Kind words. Honesty. Sabbath rest. These are love embodied.
Christ’s death reveals the depth of God’s love, and the beauty of His law.
“The greatest evidence of the power of Christianity that can be presented to the world is a well-ordered, well-disciplined family.” The Adventist Home, p. 32
Obedience at home is where love becomes visible.
We cannot understand God’s law until we understand God’s love.
And we cannot understand God’s love until we see His law as the gift it truly is.
The commandments are not:
chains,restrictions,or conditions for acceptance.
They are:
principles of love, foundations of peace, reflections of God’s character, and directions for abundant living.
To keep God’s commandments is simply to love God the way God loves us.
Satan’s primary aim is to misrepresent the character of God and undermine His law.
From the beginning, he has sought to make God appear harsh, unjust, and unloving, twisting the law to seem burdensome rather than life-giving.
through lies, trickery, and half-truths, he tries to cause doubt, rebellion, and disobedience. He even confuses people about mercy and justice, making it seem like God’s law is against peace.
while hiding the truth about God’s character and plan of salvation.
“Satan seeks to overthrow the law of God, and thus destroy man’s hope of eternal life” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 33).
His goal is to turn hearts away from God, making obedience appear oppressive, while leading people into spiritual ruin.
Recognizing his strategies helps believers understand that God’s law is not a burden, but a manifestation of His love, designed to guide, protect, and bless us.
