Titus 1-4 Paul starts off with describing his role, belongs to God and is sent by Christ. Writing to Titus, and creete. The ministry that he has for God’elect, ackonowledingitg truth which is in harmony with godliness. Addressing Titus as his son in the faith, wishing grace, peace and mercy upon them (blessing them). 5 Paul left Titus in Creete to set things in order that aren’t, establish leadership, appointing elders (leaders) in the different cities of Creete. 3 things to do: - Correct things that are lacking - Establish proper church leadership - Appoint elders in the different cities 6-9 Lists the qualifying factors of those he’s to point as leaders (qualification of an elder)- their character- blameless, hospitable, must know scripture. 10-11 Reason why leaders are needed is explained here, cz there are people who were rebellious and deceptive, particularly those of the circumcision. These leaders were to bring order amongst the chaos, these false teachers deceive people, teaches false doctrines (tradition, not scripture), for the sake of dishonest gain (they were doing it for gain). 12-13 One of their own (a false prophet) even said they are always liars, evil beats and lazy gluttons)- morally corrupt. The goal here to correct them, that they may be sound in their faith (restoration to truth not confusion) 14-16 Not listening to man made teachings (fables and commandments), to the pure, all things are pure (cz the heart is) but to the unbelieving its impure ( cz their hearts are evil)- people claim to know God but their lives reveal whether its genuine profession. Some people claim to be christians but their way of living says otherwise (they deny Him) Being abominable: extremely unpleasant Disobedient: being a hearer not a doer Disqualified for every good work: disqualified bcz their good works don’t mean anything cz its not genuine. Application: Live by our profession Truth must produce godliness (the more kwizera the more godliness) Don’t listen to man made commandment Correct when its needed to restore guard your mind and conscience
