Titus Study Notes

Chapter 2 Qualities of a sound church Verse : 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility,[ a ] 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of [ b ]you. 1-2 Continuing from previous chapter, he first talked about the characteristics of false teachers/prophets and how Titus and appointed leaders ought to bring truth. For Titus, he’s instructed to speak things that are of sound doctrine (unconfused msg). The older men (mature in the faith) ought to be sober (clear minded), reverent (bubaha Imana/worthy of respect), temperate (disciplined-not controlled by impulse), sound in faith (knowledge their faith and aren’t confused), in love, in patience (having the fruit of the spirit evident in their lives). 3-5 the older (mature women in the faith) have influence and can influence the younger for good or bad, they can influence them to live godly lives and live peaceably in the homes by demonstrating these principles to them. Likewise thyre to be reverent (respectable conduct) , not slanderers (speaking lies about someone, ruining their reputation), not given to much wine (don’t be enslaved by alcohol/apettite) given=addiction, teachers of good things (teaching and training the young women to love their husbands, their children), to be discreet (avoid drawing attention/cautious,hidden, private), chaste (abstaining from unlawful sexual intercourse, remaining pure, or having a style that is simple and unadorned- so loyal and modest), homemaker (taking care of the home/household), good (be good like God), obedient to their own husband (submitting, respectful relationship). Do all this that the word of God may not be blasphemed (oh look at that christian who does contrary to what the word teaches) which hinders the gospel. 6-8 This for the young people- be sober minded (clear mind/ not controlled by anything), lead by example in all things, in doctrine showing integrity (so what you believe is not shakeable), reverence (respectable and respectful), incorruptibility (don’t be corrupted). Like a person getting arrested is to not say anything that can be used against them, so we ought to remain silent, and when we speak to speak what can’t be used against us. That the opp may be ashamed and having nothing evil to say of you- like Jesus- they had nothing to condemn Him for, they said for your good works we don’t stone you… 9-10 Those under an authority are to be obedient to their matters, pleasing them in all things, not answering back, pilfering, showing fidelity.. that they may say good things about God. 11-15 As we receive the grace of God bringing salvation, it teaches us how to live, training us to leave sin and live godly in this present age, looking forward to the hope- His 2nd coming. (Grace appears then Christ- complete salvation). He died for us: that he might redeem (rescuing us back to Himself from the bondage of sin), His sacrifice liberates us, and He purifies us (making us holy as He is, restoring us to the image we have lost- likeness In character). And Titus was to speak these things boldly, exhort (encourage people to keep it), and rebel with all authority. And don’t let others despise you (look down on you-cz he was young). Application - Sound doctrine should produce sound character - Lead by example - Live with Jesus’ return in mind - Don’t say anything (have anything in our speech that can be used against us - Speak with Grace - Submit to authority - Be worthy of respect and show reverence - Be holy as he’s holy (good) - Don’t allow yo self to be looked down coz of age or something
