Chapter 3 How children of God should be living 1-2 We’re to submit to rulers and authorities, obeying them, and always be ready for every good work. To not speak evil of no one, be peaceable, gentle, showing humility (putting others before you) to all men- this is how you ought to treat all, not just friends and family, not just those who do it back to you. 3 why should we treat them like this ? Because us too were once like that, wouldn’t you have wanted to be treated like this in that state- For we also were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived… (without the grace of God, I would be like this too, so let me love them and want them to receive the same grace). 4-5 We were like that too until the love of God, our saviour appeared to us, not by our works but by His kindness and mercy, He saved us and is transforming us, restoring and renewing of the Holy Spirit (John 3)- Grace, salvation, changed lives then good works ( order of salvation). 6-7 (trinity work here- The Father saves, the Holy Spirit renews and the Son is the saviour whom the blessing of salvation and the gift of the Holy Spirit comes through). - cz the Holy Spirit goes to those who are His. And being justified by His grace, becoming heirs= inheriting eternal life- romans 3:24 8 we aren’t saved by good works but being saved produces the good works 9-11 Avoid dissension- foolish disputes etc and other useless arguments that don’t edify anyone. If someone is warned for causing division, warn them twice but if they continue then separate from them. Cz that person has a twisted view and is sinning by being divisive and with this thyre condemning. 12-14 Giving instructions on those who will meet him, and reminding them to continue in good works, meeting the needs of people (this way theyre being fruitful- good works show heart posture) 15 He sends his greetings and those with him and blesses them Amen Application: - Live peaceably with all, and show humility to all (friends foes) - Submit to authority (obey the laws of the land) - Remember that we too once were sinners and to treat others how we would’ve wanted to be treated - Allow the Holy Spirit to transform us - Avoid getting into silly arguments - Continue in good works
