Galatians Questions & Summary
Summary:
Starts off by reminding us of our freedom through Christ, don’t try to go back to keeping the law- salvation by works such as circumcision. Trying to keep the law means you gotta keep the whole law which you can’t so we’re cooked if we try to. Those who try to do the works are rejecting Christ and His grace. Those who’ve accepted Christ through the Spirit (working in us) wait for the hope of righteousness by faith (we believe that righteousness will be produced in us by God) not us earning it. In Christ Jesus, circumcision doesn’t add or take away anything from your salvation-but faith working through love. 7–10 they were running well, till the false teachers came and taught em false teachings, which kinda started decaying them spiritually. Paul has confidence that the Lord will retire them, and those who are bringing that leaven will receive judgement (causing others to sin/fall is a serious sin before God). 11-14 Paul says if he was preaching salvation through works (circumcision) he wouldn’t be persecuted but the fact that he sing being persecuted proves he’s preaching the message of the cross. If he wants preaching the message of the cross, no one would be offended. Paul wishes that those who are bringing in the leaven/hindering them would castrate themselves (not breed anymore) or like produce new converts to the falsehood. The freedom we have in Christ is not permission to sin or self indulge, but instead become servants to one another through love- that’s the law summed up (love your neighbour as yourself). Watch out, if u keep going back and forth, you might just destroy each other completely. 16- “I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
Galatians 5:16 NKJV
Walk with the Spirit and you will not practice the works of the flesh, you walk with the Spirit, and He will give you victory over sin. Not stop sinning, then walk with the Spirit- cz it’s the Spirit who enables us to stop sinning- abide in me Jesus says, without Me you can do nothing. It’s not “if I stop doing this, then I’ll have the spirit” it’s by walking with Him, He will enable me.
John 15 - us the branches abiding in Him, leads to him producing the fruit (fruit of the spirit). The Spirit and the flesh are contrary, what one wants to do the other doesn’t want. Because these are war within us (rivals) we usually end up doing what we don’t wanna do (we wanna do what’s right). The flesh has the upper hand - we naturally wanna sin. In order for the Spirit to win we gotta actually fight (say a prayer when tempted- have His word stored in our minds/hearts- psalms 119:11). 18 being led by the Spirit, obedience comes naturally, it’s not like we’re under a law. 19-21 lists what is evident in a person’s life that is led by the flesh, says and such like these (meaning he’s not listing all sins, these are examples). Those who do these will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit- then lists them- when these are evident in ourselves, it shows we’re walking by Him- looking like Him, transformed into His character. 24 those who Christ’s have crucified (killed) the flesh and passions and desires- it’s not a fun experience- crucifixion involves intense suffering- denying self - and finally the flesh being crucified- now all people will see is Christ in us, the fruit of the Spirit- this is where true evangelism starts, cz what we’re sharing with them is now is evident in our own lives- Isiah 60:1. If we are alive in the Spirit (by His power) let us walk by Him- being led by Him and His fruit evident in us. 26 let us not practice the works of the flesh.
